Why this site?

The main reason is to provide a working link for the Read Me in the freeciv.org More Distributions page.
The freeciv forum beeing very unfriendly for me with Safari, I supposed it should be the same for others Mac users running Safari as their main browser.

Yes it's in french, I'm French. I'll post in english on these pages, or at least try to write the most correct english, because it should be easier for the majority of you than learning french.

Why an OSX SDL port?

For years, I played the ppc/gtk port by Nathan Brazil.
Despite the fact it makes use of X11 (and force you to install it if you didn't when you first installed OSX on your box), I found it really nice and smooth with plenty of options. I had no reason to search for another solution as it suited my world conquering needs.

Things began to change a year or so when I switched from an iBook to a MacBook.
I must admit I have the bad habit to enjoy playing with/against 30 AI players on a 29 thousand tiles land… When I'm not enjoying massive games, I, sometimes, play with some fellows who are still on G4.
While the gtk port runs perfectly on ppc Macs, on an intel with my huge games it began to run slow when industrialization times come by, much slower than it did on a G4.
In the same time, while looking for a solution on the freeciv.org web site, I stumbled on Freeciv sdl screenshots which I found really really nice (not that the gtk interface looks like cold war architecture but… well it does). And… SDL… from Sam Lantiga (where did I read he was formerly working for Apple?) who is now working for Blizzard? SDL like in "no X11"? Couldn't be bad, let's try it and make this one UB!

What is Freeciv?

"Freeciv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the stone age to the space age...".

This is directly taken from the Freeciv homepage, you'll be able to find resources, screenshots and more infos there.
